My calling to art has been a difficult and emotional journey; I struggle with the concept of being an artist and being able to survive in a world of commercialism. I embrace technology so readily that it worries me, yet it is its accessibility that I adore. I began my journey into art with studying fine art photography, but my degree was tempered with emerging digital technologies and I soon realised that it was this process that attracted me. At the time people were just beginning to experiment with the digital image and my work appeared in small group exhibitions as laser printouts of abstracts, actually images taken from the TV screen and then manipulated with the computer. I gave up art to travel; I wanted to experience a challenge, challenge to my nature and the development of my personality. It was only recently after 6 years that I felt the stirring of discomfort, I wanted to create art, I needed to create art. The burning desire had surfaced again and I had to obey its calling. In completing a Masters in Digital Art from 2006-2008 I was able to find process again and discover new technologies and movements within the art world. With technology I explore my thought processes; I am concerned with my in-between world of dreams, unconscious and spirituality. |
